As a mother and grandmother, I want to share about my exciting experiences with homeopathy! But first, here is a short disclaimer… I am now going to officially take off my “doula hat” for a bit and put on my “mommy hat” for the purpose of this post.

As a doula, it is not within my scope of practice to make any medical recommendations or offer alternative treatment options.  So, I need to make that clear first. 🙂  But, I share these thoughts and experiences as a mother and grandmother instead!

How to use homeopathy for an easier pregnancy, labor and childbirth

Why I use Homeopathy

I was so excited when I found out about homeopathy! I prefer getting to the root of the problem and helping the body to heal itself.  As I have said in previous posts, I truly believe that our bodies were designed to heal themselves. Our immune systems are amazing! I prefer a type of medicine that encourages our immune system to self-correct, rather than a medicine or treatment that merely suppresses symptoms.

I agree that there is definitely a place for conventional medicine, especially in the case of acute life-threatening illnesses or serious accidents, but when it comes to minor ailments or chronic conditions, I think that is truly where homeopathy shines!

In my home, we have used homeopathy to heal ear infections, bladder infections, sinus infections, bronchitis, strep throat, colds, influenza and even Lyme’s Disease! Partnered with a nutritious real-foods diet, we have found this method of treatment to be sufficient in avoiding antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals.

Although I now frequently use homeopathic remedies to treat my family’s conditions, that has not always been the case.  Until recently, I didn’t really understand how homeopathy worked. It seemed WAY too complicated, so I chose to shy away from it all together!

I also thought that homeopathic medicine was synonymous with natural or herbal medicine. I was also led to believe that it was merely quackery and not really true medicine. Now I know that none of these are actually true!

What is Homeopathy?

If homeopathy is not the same as herbal, nutritional or natural therapies, then what exactly is it? According to my favorite homeopathic educator and practitioner, Joette Calabrese:

“Homeopathy is a system of medicine that is fundamentally different from conventional (allopathic) medicine.  Whereas allopathic medicine focuses on suppression of symptoms, homeopathy seeks to correct the underlying imbalance that caused the symptoms in the first place. Homeopathy achieves this by strengthening the body’s own defenses, thereby allowing the body to heal itself.”

Similar to allopathic medicines, homeopathic medicines are also created in a laboratory using substances found in nature. In the case of homeopathy, these substances in their natural “raw” state, may even be toxic to the body. However, once they are diluted many times in the laboratory, that substance (in its highly diluted state) now becomes the stimulation your immune system needs to promote healing. Sounds confusing, right? That’s because our understanding of medicine in the western world is totally opposite of this!

Since I am no expert in homeopathy, I recommend that you visit this site for a more thorough explanation of how homeopathy works!

Classical vs. Practical Homeopathy

There are two schools of thought with respect to homeopathy. Simply put… classical homeopathy matches the totality of the individual’s symptoms and personality. It involves the use of a single remedy and treatment is strictly individualized. On the other hand, clinical or practical homeopathy matches specific remedies that target particular conditions with the symptoms or complaints of the individual.

While I have tremendous respect for classical homeopaths who spend years studying in order to treat patients, it is not very practical or affordable for the average mom.  When an acute condition flares up, a visit to a classical homeopath can be very expensive. In my family, we have used classical homeopaths on several occasions with amazing results. I certainly recommend them for more serious or chronic conditions!

How to Learn Homeopathy

Despite very positive experiences with the classical approach, I wanted a way that was more sustainable for my family. That is when I stumbled across a lady named Joette Calabrese. She is amazing!  Joette is a trained classical homeopath who decided to empower mothers to use homeopathic medicines to cure their families. She teaches mothers her methods of practical homeopathy so that they can treat and cure their own families.

Much of the information Joette gives to mothers online is totally free, too!  She has a very informative website, FREE weekly podcasts, FREE printable remedy cards at the end of every blog post, a great blog, courses and materials to purchase and much more! She even hosts a Facebook group for anyone who purchases her courses. This Facebook group has been an extremely supportive online community for me!

Using homeopathy can be scary at first, but I am so very glad that I stuck with it! Now we are reaping the benefits of much better health. I hope that she can help you as much as she has helped me!  (P.S. I am not making money by recommending Joette!!!)

If you are interested in learning more about using homeopathy with your family, I highly recommend that you subscribe to Joette’s blog to get this free information coming weekly into your inbox!

Combination Remedies for Babies & Children

Hylands is one of my favorite companies for homeopathic products. This is mainly because they offer very economical packaging. They sell their remedies in larger-sized bottles. Some companies only offer tiny vials. They also dissolve very quickly making them the easiest option for babies and small children!

Hylands makes several really great combination remedies which work quite well. Here are some of the ones that you might wish to stock up on. If you don’t have them on hand when the crying starts, you will probably wish you did!

My Favorite Family Remedy Kit

If you have read this far, you are probably moderately interested in giving homeopathy a try! If so, I recommend starting with a multi-remedy kit. Here is my favorite remedy kit. I like this kit because it contains the 100 most popular homeopathic remedies. Most of what you would need for first aid and common family illnesses is in this kit.

The vials and pills are very tiny, but they manage to get A LOT of remedies into one vial, so it’s a really great deal. I take this kit with me on family vacations, camping trips and outings. I don’t like to be without it and there have been multiple times when we were really glad I brought it along!

One notable time was when granddaughter #1 fell off her chair and face-planted onto the hard ground. We watched in horror as a HUGE egg began forming on her little forehead. I grabbed my Arnica montana from my remedy kit and quickly dosed her. Within minutes, the egg started shrinking and the little 2 year-old regained her previous happy disposition!  (Arnica montana is the premier remedy for pain relief and injuries to children, by the way!)

Another Great Kit for New Moms and Babies!

This remedy kit also comes with a great complementary book to help you figure out how to use it!  The remedies in this little kit are suggested for pregnancy, childbirth and newborn care. I have also heard great things about this author and the remedies in this kit are top notch!

Great Remedy Kit for Infants and Children!

After finding out that my favorite Hyland’s Kid’s Kit has been discontinued, 🙁  I went in search of a great substitute. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that RxHomeo also has a great little remedy kit for children!  Score!  Not only that, but this kit has even more great medicines inside!

There are 20 different remedies in this kit plus a great little reference guide to help you choose the correct remedy to fit your child’s symptoms. Like the Hyland’s brand, RxHomeo medicines dissolve almost immediately, making them perfect for infants and small children!

RxHomeo also sells lots of single remedy bottles at very reasonable prices, so it will be easy to refill your kit when it gets low. My family has used RxHomeo remedies and we have liked them as much as Hylands. Maybe even more so, since they are cheaper on Amazon for the larger-sized bottles!

The remedies in this children’s kit can be used to treat teething pain, earaches, stomach aches, colic, gas, reflux, bumps and bruises, colds, allergies, pink eye and much more! I will never be without this little kit as long as there are children in my life!

I have given children’s remedy kits as gifts to my friends who are having babies and my own grandchildren use one as well. It also makes a great baby shower gift for the crunchy mom in your life! If you are having a baby, you might wish to add this remedy kit to your baby registry too!

*You can’t go wrong buying and at least trying these remedies before making a trip to the E.R. or doctor’s office. In many cases, you might just decide to turn the car around after your child starts feeling better!
